2022 Student Prefect Council

What is the Prefect Council?

The Prefect Council is a unique form of student government that provides participants with the opportunity to have a real impact on school life through a hands-on leadership experience and meaningful mentor relationships with faculty. The Council consists of two students in each grade level from 8-12th grades. In order to join the Council, those interested must fill out an application, take part in an administrative-led interview, and be appointed to the council by the Faculty Prefect Advisor.

What will Prefects do?

Student prefects have three main roles: 1) organizing grade-specific and school-wide initiatives and social events,   2) organizing community-focused service outreach, and 3) modeling the Student Honor Code and inspiring servant-leadership in others. Much of the Prefects’ time will be spent brainstorming, planning, and managing events and activities intended to nurture the relationships among Redeemer’s community.

However, prefects are far more than event planners. They are expected to model virtue and spiritual maturity, conduct themselves in accordance with the Student Honor Code, and be examples to the school community. This means striving to live a godly life – one that takes seriously the ethics of Scripture, seeks to be holy as the Lord is holy, and is quick to confess and repent of sin and shortcomings. To support their growth in this role, each prefect is provided with purposeful leadership development facilitated by a faculty member. Prefects meet with this faculty member on a regular basis to discuss leadership topics, share activities the prefect is working on, and receive spiritual guidance and discipleship.

Serving as a prefect is an extraordinary opportunity for our students because it offers them a level of autonomy uncommon in typical school environments. Redeemer Prefects must own their ideas, taking full responsibility for both their failures and their victories. The Council has been structured so that its planned activities will succeed or fail based on the Prefects’ efforts. Although this approach carries inherent risks, it also affords an opportunity for Redeemer students to grow into competent, humble, and Christ-honoring leaders, for the good of the school at large and for the glory of God.
