Why We Memorize

by Mrs. Annie Leach

Children memorize many things without even trying: jump rope rhymes, lines from favorite movies or commercials, song lyrics, trivial facts about their favorite subject and many other things. Those who are around children at this age know that they love to repeat these memorized treasures to others, perhaps ad nauseam. At Redeemer Classical School, we believe that it is our duty and privilege to use this natural ability for memorization in a way that will benefit our students for years to come. We are committed to seizing the opportunity to help children memorize while they are able to do so easily.

Therefore, our students memorize POETRY to give them a sense of language, rhythm, rhyme and an appreciation for a well-turned phrase. We hope they will learn to imitate some of the skillful writing they have learned. They store Bible passages in their memory so that they may meditate on SCRIPTURE throughout their days. And our students memorize SPEECHES and HISTORICAL DATES, because, later, these will form the foundation for their understanding of the whole picture of history.

Redeemer children delight in the memory work we have them do, and they love sharing what they know with their parents during First Friday Recitations and Evening Programs. We hope they will carry these examples of the good, the true and the beautiful with them throughout their lives.
